Overspending can be like a drug. You spend and spend without giving your full attention to what you’re doing. (Shop ’til you drop, anyone?) Or maybe you withhold money or hoard it. These are all spaces of contraction where people hide. You may have noticed these patterns in yourself and people you know. We are still learning how humans as a species interrelate with money. The field of neuroeconomics, which studies the foundations of economic behaviour from psychological (and other) perspectives, is in its infancy. However, there has been some interesting research about money and how it affects us. In 2006 Kathleen Vohs published a study about money and people’s sense of interdependence. Her experiment involved two groups of subjects. Subjects in the first group were primed to think about money by, for example, having them sit alone and wait for her at a table strewn with Monopoly money or …

So I was thinking that the best way to do this episode is to really get super duper vulnerable and showcase what a session with Brenda is really like. That’s right guys—I am going to lay it all out there and be the subject for some of the questions. Basically, we’re recording a consultation so that you can learn with me and …

If you are wealthy, you get more respect than if you are poor: your opinion matters more, your life is more highly valued, the media glorifies you. As a culture, we are captivated by the rich and famous. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be rich or poor, but somewhere in between, there will always be people who are both better off and worse off than you are. And if you believe that how much money and “stuff” you have accumulated is proof of your value, it’s hard to measure up. Living in a society that encourages constant comparison with others can lead to unhappiness and lack of fulfillment. But the good news is that we are so much greater than the numbers in …
